Some conservative pickup truck drivers are intentionally rigging their vehicles to pollute the air because of their deep hatred for President Obama and environmentally efficient cars such as the Prius.
This bizarre trend, called “roll coal” or "rollin' coal," is when a truck driver installs smoke stacks and equipment that tricks a truck's engine into needing more fuel, causing the engine to spew thick black smoke.
Slate.com notes a video (below) entitled “Prius Repellent” that shows a truck intentionally gunning its engine and pouring smoke out of its stacks in order to send pollution to a Prius driving behind.
“I run into a lot of people that really don’t like Obama at all,” one seller of "roll coal" kits told Slate.com. “If he’s into the environment, if he’s into this or that, we’re not. I hear a lot of that. To get a single stack on my truck, that’s my way of giving them the finger. You want clean air and a tiny carbon footprint? Well, screw you.”
According to Vocativ.com, there is an entire sick subculture on the web that is dedicated to increasing pollution, including "Facebook pages (16,000 collective followers) Tumblers and Instagram (156,714 posts) to share photos and videos of their Dodge Rams and GM Silverados purposefully poisoning the sky."

According to the Clean Air Taskforce, diesel exhaust leads to 21,000 premature deaths of Americans each year, which would cause a fit among truckers if foreign terrorists were to kill that many Americans, but it's of little concern to truckers who want to "roll coal."
“It’s just fun,” a trucker named Robbie told Vocativ.com. “Just driving and blowing smoke and having a good time.”
“If someone makes you mad, you can just roll coal, and it makes you feel better sometimes,” added Ryan, a high school senior. “The other day I did it to this kid who was driving a Mustang with his windows down, and it was awesome.”
“The feeling around here is that everyone who drives a small car is a liberal,” stated Ryan. “I rolled coal on a Prius once just because they were tailing me. I’m not a scientist, but it couldn’t be too horrible. There are a lot of factories that are doing way worse than my truck.”
