A friend of Harmony Jones, a 10-year-old girl from Memphis, recently told her that she could not attend her birthday party because Harmony is black.
Harmony’s friend notified her through a letter.
“Maby (sic) I will not be able to come to your birthday sleepover, because my dad will not let me go because you are black,” it read.
Harmony’s father, Christopher Jones, found the letter and was caught off guard by its contents.
“It angered me a little bit," he said. "It hurt me that my 10-year-old girl had to deal with this, and I myself never thought I would have to deal with this.”
While he is surprised by the result, Christopher does not blame the young girl in question.
“I guess us as parents need to be more aware and conscious about what we teach our children,” he said.
