An elderly woman’s last words, posted on May 7 and insulting Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, have captured international attention.
At first, the obituary -- photographed and posted on Imgur by user DontEatBadBread -- paints the 86-year-old grandmother, only known as Ruth, as a typical old lady.
“She enjoyed riding horses, crocheting pillows for her grandchildren, and cooking her signature pasta casserole,” it begins.
But the obituary notes that in her will, Ruth, who died in January, requested the last words on her newspaper obituary read, “If you vote for Donald Trump, you seriously must be a f------ dumb a--.”
The image has since gone viral, receiving nearly 300,000 views in five days, garnering mixed reactions.
While many merely responded with jokes such as, “Ruthless,” others were more political in their replies.
"Good riddance, Ruth,” one user, perhaps a Trump supporter, unkindly wrote.
Another Trump supporter, almost agreed.
“She’s not wrong. But on the other hand, Hillary Clinton. So yeah, go Trump 2016 I guess,” the person wrote.
Some praised Ruth and her sentiments.
“Ruth will surely be missed. The ones with common sense always go too soon,” one commenter wrote.
“A TRUE Conservative,” another wrote. “Liberals KNOW Donald can be their puppet. Seriously. Not a right bone in his entire body.”
In April 2015, another individual also posted an obituary related to the American presidential election, Whitley’s Funeral Home website reveals.
At first, the obituary reads like any other.
“Larry Darrell Upright, 81, passed away Monday, April 13, 2015 at CMC-NorthEast. Darrell was born August 15, 1933 in Cabarrus County to the late Arthur and Mary Ruth Upright,” the obituary begins.
“Darrell's greatest joy was his family and he will forever be remembered as a loving husband, father, and Grandaddy,” it adds.
Like Ruth’s obituary, its end suddenly turns political.
Also, the family respectfully asks that you do not vote for Hillary Clinton in 2016. R.I.P. Grandaddy,” it says.
