Students at the University of Michigan and activists from By Any Means Necessary (BAMN) recently claimed that minority enrollment at the college was “the new Jim Crow.”
According to TheCollegeFix.com, the activists and students held a three-hour “public tribunal on hostile campus climate” last Friday night. They reportedly promised to “kick this university’s ass” and “shut the campus down” unless more minority students were enrolled.
During the "public tribunal," speakers attacked the alleged sexism, racism, anti-Islamic practices and misogyny on campus.
“Day in and day out we are forced to sit awkwardly in class because we are scared of what people might think of us,” stated student Tala Taleb, who wore a Hijab. “I always feel like I have to be on my absolute best behavior to not portray Arabs in a negative light. I don’t feel comfortable knowing that I am being judged for everything I do.”
BAMN activists and students promised to “occupy” the Board of Regents meeting at the college and block campus operations on Nov. 20.
“We are ready to shut down this campus at the Regents meeting if they cannot turn their wrongs into rights,” stated student Joseph Frailey.
TheCollegeFix.com reports that one speaker who went by “Donovan” said: “We have power, and we can kick this university’s ass. This is our campus, and they better open it the f--- up, or we will shut it down.”
Student members of BAMN recently stated in an op-ed for the Michigan Daily:
The drop in minority enrollment on this campus is a national scandal. The numbers just released for 2014-2015 show that enrollment of underrepresented minority students is the lowest it has been since 1970; this year’s freshman class is 3.7 percent black, 4.3 percent Latin@, and 1.4 percent Native American.
For more than 40 years, the University has broken the promises it made to the Black Action Movement after the movement shut down the campus in a three-week student strike demanding 10 percent Black enrollment within two years. The percentage of Black students on this campus today is less than in 1973. This is the new Jim Crow.
