English teacher Erin Thorne is facing up to 10 years in jail after allegedly having a sexual relationship with an underage male student.

Thorne, who worked at Broadneck High School in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, is accused of sending the unidentified teen sexually explicit text messages and nude photos of herself.

According to the Daily Mail, police said the relationship started in the student’s senior year and turned sexual when the student reached 18 years of age.

Police were tipped off about the affair last November.

Thorne was placed on administrative leave while an investigation was carried out.

Police claim that Thorne and the student became friends during his senior year. Thorne then allegedly began sending him sexually explicit text messages.

The two continued to exchange explicit texts while the student was under 18 years of age.

The student and teacher had sex, but only after the student had reached the age of consent of 18 years of age.

Thorne has been charged with the display of obscene matter to a minor and child porn solicit subject.

Broadneck High School principal David Smith sent an email to parents assuring them Thorne had not further contact with students after she was placed on leave: "We have a great school and a great community that supports our Broadneck students in their individual quests for excellence."

"It saddens me that charges like this cast a negative light on our school and tarnish the incredible work that our staff, parents, and students do on a daily basis. We are a resilient school, however, and I have no doubt that we will band together so that our students continue to excel."
