Student Spikes Gatorade Cooler with Bleach

| by Michael Allen

An unidentified Gaffney Middle School student in Gaffney, S.C. recently admitted to placing a cupful of bleach in an opposing basketball team's seven-gallon cooler full of Gatorade.

Players from both Granard Middle School and Gaffney Middle School drank from the cooler and experienced burning stomachs on Tuesday, but no one was seriously injured.

The student behind the bleach spiking was caught after he bragged about the poisoning in text messages to his friends.

"As sad and unfortunate as this situation is we are happy that it wasn't any worse," Cherokee County School Superintendent Dr. Quincie Moore told WBTW.

Dr. Moore says the student and three witnesses were disciplined, but refused to say what their punishment was.

"We will make sure we have oversight now, make sure we have procedures in place and that adults are supervising to ensure this doesn't happen again," added Dr. Moore.

It's not clear if an adult will be assigned to guard the coolers at the games.

The school district is paying for the doctor's visits and self-reported the incident to the Gaffney Police.

Amazingly, the student told police he didn't mean to harm anyone by tricking them into drinking bleach, notes WISTV.
