Pro-Gun Michigan Man Carries Rifle, Prompts Scare At School (Video)

A high school in Madison Heights, Michigan, was placed on lockdown after a pro-gun advocate was spotted carrying a rifle nearby on March 4.

According to 7 Action News, the man walked near Lamphere High School with a rifle strapped to his back. The police were subsequently called.

Moms Demand Action, a gun safety group, posted a video of the police confrontation with the open carry advocate on their Facebook page (video below).

A longer version of the video was linked on the Detroit Open Carry Facebook page from YouTube by Facebook user Shawn Nixon.

The man had a lengthy discussion with police officers about gun rights and public property. While the officers were polite, the man sprinkled his comments with numerous insults and refused to identify himself.

The officers said they just wanted to make sure that he wasn't going on school property. The man eventually walked to city hall, where he was confronted by another officer.

The state of Michigan allows people to openly carry rifles and handguns, as long as it's not done in a threatening manner.

"It is difficult. It is a balancing act. We have the rights of the citizen, his right to open carry," Madison Heights Assistant Police Chief Corey Haines said.
