Hampshire College Creates Scholarship for Illegal Immigrants

article image

Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts, has created a new scholarship for undocumented students, reports the Boston Globe.

So far, Hampshire College has $300,000 in donations for the new scholarship, which can support one student every four years.

In Massachusetts, undocumented immigrants can attend college, but are charged out-of-state rates for tuition.

Undocumented immigrants are not allowed to receive federal financial aid such as Pell Grants.

Hampshire College sociology professor Margaret Cerullo told the Boston Globe: “Many of us who went to college in the post-World War II boom went on full scholarships. All financial aid was need-based. Increasingly that’s not true anymore. For a lot of us, access to higher education is a deep principle."

“We raised money from alums, prior donors, parents, and the graduating class. We asked students to dedicate their graduate gift to the undocumented student fund. We tried to raise money on every front we could. We wanted funding not for one year, but ongoing to ensure access for undocumented students.”

This is a private school, so I assume they recieve NO government funding of any sort? Including Pell grants?

Only US citizens would be

Only US citizens would be eligible for Pell Grants, guaranteed student loans, etc. However, it is also true that this school is not directly funded by any government agency whatsoever.

Then choose the option that lets you check for errors, also along the top of the application. Once it's cleared, hit "save and submit." You will again be required to log on. Do so and follow the final instructions that will appear on your screen. Thanks. Regards, http://www.government-grant.biz/small-business-grants/

Pell grants, guaranteed

Pell grants, guaranteed student loans, etc are government funds. If government funds go into their coffers, they are bound by the rules of them just like religious schools. I have no problem with religious schools not getting government money, I just think private schools running a political agenda should be under the same rules.

There is a big difference

There is a big difference between some qualified students getting federal money, and a privately funded scholarship for an illegal immigrant. All private accredited schools get federal funds indirectly through student aid, and religious schools do not follow the same rules as public schools, who receive direct state and federal funding.

giving aid and comfort to the illegal aliens, is a felony so no they can not do what they want in this nation.

This only applies to the transportation or the actual act of coming to this country. Once here, giving aid like this is not illegal. For example, public schools cannot refuse admission to illegal alien children.

I have to say it's awfully hard to argue against the law. I see what you're saying. Ultimately a judge would decide what would happen to them, right?

Read the law carefully.

Read the law carefully. Unless Hampshire college is directly inducing illegal aliens to cross the border, they have broken no law.

Ich. Looking at that sign.

Ich. Looking at that sign. "Um...yes, even though these people committed a crime by crossing the border..um...they should like not be punished for it... Right? Um yeah and so instead we should like totally give them money and stuff." you know what I see? Another incentive to cross illegally. Rather than rewarding someone who waited a long time to do things the proper way, you want to reward someone for ignoring the rules and system, and by their actions has created a negative stigma towards the entire immigrant population.

I love how this issue becomes more acceptable the further from the border you are. Let me explain something. People don't just cross the Rio Grande willy nilly like they used to. Now you pretty much HAVE to pay a coyote to get you across. And do you know what the coyote does with that money whether or not you make it? He gives it to his bosses. Do you know what his bosses do with it? Use it to buy more guns to continue their petty drug war that has left hundreds of thousands dead. These immigrants indirectly fund the cartels, fund the violence, fund the slaughter. Do you know what many of them carry while they are crossing in exchange for the coyote's help? Narcotics, both hard and soft. So to reward these people is an absolute insult to our Border Patrol, our nation, and the immigrants who actually waited and put the work in to get here LEGALLY.

Unfortunately, doing it the

Unfortunately, doing it the right way doesn't always work out. Im sure many of these people would have preferred to do it that way. When that fails, it comes down to providing something better for your family and that means crossing illegally. None of us here get it because we already have it good in the USA.

"We don't get it." I think

"We don't get it." I think that's the most overused argument in the whole border control controversy. The problem is that I DO get it. I live in Texas. I've BEEN to Mexico and I've seen the crap down there myself. But everyone's actually the people far from the border that don't get it. US citizens living along the border are subjected to threats from smugglers if they don't let them use their land to smuggle through. There are cartel murders being carried out on both sides of the borders. And some of these immigrants would be willing to harm an officer trying to arrest them. Much as i hate to use the tired old line of "They take our jobs!" it really is true. They fill up spaces that laid off or underprivileged Americans could be filling. Of course there's the old tired counter to that that says,"Americans are lazy and don't WANT these jobs." I've never seen a shred of evidence supporting this. And even were it true, if we stopped giving out so much welfare these people would end up NEEDING those jobs." so why oh why would we want to support people who end up supporting the violence across the border. People who by trying to take care of their families are indirectly responsible for the murders of thousands?

You are talking apples &

You are talking apples & oranges. You are defending federal law breakers because they want to make money(for whatever reason), but that is completely different from collecting money to provide a free education to an illegal adult. If that illegal student came here with a parent to make money, he/she is now the adult lawbreaker who should file for legal status or go to college in the nation in which he/she is a citizen. Every person at age 18 is legally responsible for their action. These 18 year olds are choosing to break the law. They deserve their day in federal court along with those aiding and abetting a federal crime.

Many of the children of

Many of the children of illegal aliens had no part in making the decisions that brought them here. They attended US schools, learned to speak English, and are "american" in all but their paperwork. I think this is the intention behind this scholarship.

As a private school, they can target any group they wish with a scholarship.

Lethal1ty's picture

I understand that point of

I understand that point of view and sympathize with those individuals. However, how are they going to judge who was a child immigrant and who wasn't? Also, same principle. More incentive for parents across the border to risk their lives and fund cartels to get here. It's actually even worse for them because many of these coyotes will just ditch the parents and the kids because they slow them down, leaving them lost out in the desert to die.
