Fox News Upset Over University Class 'Problem Of Whiteness' (Video)

Arizona State University (ASU) is offering a new course this year entitled “Studies in American Literature/Culture: U.S. Race Theory & the Problem of Whiteness.”

Campus Reform reporter and ASU student Lauren Clark wrote that the class description on the ASU website said that the class would include these books: "The Possessive Investment in Whiteness, Critical Race Theory, Everyday Language of White Racism, Playing in the Dark, and The Alchemy of Race and Rights."

In response, blared the headline, "Disgrace on Campus: White Professor Teaches 'Problem of Whiteness' Course at Arizona State."

Clark appeared on the Fox News program "Fox & Friends" this morning with host Elisabeth Hasselbeck, noted (video below).

"All of these books have a disturbing trend and that's pointing to all white people as the root cause of social injustices for this country," said Clark. "So clearly, we see a course that is causing more problems than solutions."

However, "The Possessive Investment in Whiteness" description says that author George "Lipsitz's ultimate point is not to condemn all white people as racists but to challenge everyone to begin a principled examination of personal actions and political commitments."

"If the course were called the problem with blackness, the problem with being female, would that fly at the university?" asked Hasselbeck.

Clark said she was disappointed that her university would offer this class and added, "Clearly, we have a lot of work to go as a society in terms of racial tension, but having a class that suggests an entire race is the problem is inappropriate, wrong, and quite frankly, counterproductive."

However, institutional and legislated racism by the white majority in the U.S. against Native Americans, blacks, asians, European immigrants, hispanics and other minorities is a historical fact, notes The Nation.

ASU Assistant Professor Lee Bebout, who is going to teach the class, told via email, "The last 24 hours have been stressful with some of the vitriolic hate-mail that I have received."
