Fordham Retracts 2,500 Acceptance Letters After Email Mix-Up

| by Sarah Fruchtnicht

Fordham University in New York City retracted 2,500 acceptance letters just hours after they were sent, calling it an email error.

Two days before students expected to receive acceptance news, 2,500 of them received financial aid notices telling them they were accepted.

Hours later the school sent a follow up email retracting those acceptance letters.

In the end, 2,000 of those applicants were deferred and 500 were rejected.

Zoe Rankin, 18, told the New York Times she applied for early acceptance and was elated when she received the financial aid email.

“Congratulations once again on your admission to Fordham University,” the email said in bold red letters.

“She came running down the stairs, just jubilant,” said her mother, Lise Kunkel. “We were thrilled.”

Later she would be informed she was rejected.

A number of the high school seniors vented their frustration on Twitter.

“Got accepted, denied, and deferred to Fordham all in less than 24 hours,” tweeted Ashtyn.

“Accepted into Fordham!!” tweeted Mattina at 5:30 p.m. Wendesday.

Thursday at 3 p.m. he tweeted: “Now I got rejected from Fordham? What the f--k.”

“Fordham has great profs. But it was easily the worst administrated institution I’ve ever encountered,” tweeted Westchester journalist Michael Dougherty.

The school apologized for the mix-up.

“Fordham and its undergraduate admissions staff are acutely aware of the high hopes prospective students and their families have regarding college acceptances,” the school said. “The University deeply regrets that some applicants were misled by the financial aid notice. The admission staff is working with S.A.S. to find out what went wrong.”
