Earlier today, the Department of Justice ordered a California district school to provide a high school freshman access to the men’s locker room and bathroom. The student was born a female and currently identifies as male.

The school had tried to accommodate the student by providing access to the nurses’ bathroom and responding to complaints of bullying. The school also provided a separate sleeping cabin during a school field trip.

The landmark ruling also allows the student to participate in male sports and other gender-assigned extra curriculars such as boy scouts. Furthermore, the department has ordered the school to provide its teachers with special training programs for the treatment of transgender students.

The anonymous student filed a complaint that has since been resolved. Asaf Orr, a lawyer with the National Center for Lesbian Rights, has argued on behalf of the student. According to Orr, ““This sends a clear message to school districts around the country saying ‘This is what the federal government is going to be expecting of you.’
