Lifeguards were attempting to save an 18-year-old girl off the coast of Brazil on Monday when she was attacked by a shark. The shark bit off Bruni Gobbi’s left leg.

Lifeguards were able to get her to shore, but she lost too much blood and died later that evening in the hospital.

"We speculate, based on the season and the conditions, that it was a bull shark," said Rosangela Lessa, president of the agency that monitors shark attacks, to CNN affiliate Globo TV.

Gobbi was swimming with her cousin at Boa Viagem beach in Recife, Brazil. Lifeguards saw they were in distress in the choppy waters.

"The rescuers came in a matter of five minutes, but to us it felt like five years," said her cousin, Daniele Gobbi, to Globo TV. "We knew there were risks of an attack, but I didn't think that it would happen in the shallow [water], but in the deep."

The attack was caught on tape by local government security cameras.

In the last 21 years, there were 58 shark attacks in Recife and 28 of them were fatal. The area is home to one of the most popular beach resorts in Pernambuco.
