Two sailors were injured Saturday when a drone hit and damaged a San Diego-based guided missile cruiser, a Navy official said.

The Navy says the aerial target drone malfunctioned when it hit the USS Chancellorsville during training off the Southern California coast.

Lt. Lenaya Rotklein of the U.S. Third Fleet said the ship was testing its combat weapons system off Point Mugu when it was struck. The drone was being used to test the ship’s radar.

About 300 crewmembers were aboard the ship.

Two sailors were treated for minor injuries, Rotklein said.

The ship was returning to the Naval Base San Diego so that damage could be assessed, 10 News reported.

The cause of the malfunction is under Naval investigation.
