A pit bull who reportedly saved a Florida woman from a potentially fatal stabbing Dec. 18 has died.

Lucy the dog jumped in front of owner Victoria Snyder’s mother-in-law as Snyder’s knife-carrying ex-boyfriend approached at a home in Fort Myers, reports News-Press.

"If it weren't for that dog, it would have been a different scene,” said Lisa Potts, the mother-in-law about to be attacked. "She saved all our lives, she really did."

The alleged attacker, Walter Williams, stabbed Lucy three times, killing her, reports News-Press. The family tried to save the dog, but she died later.

“I applied as much pressure as I could to it to try to save her life, but she was a fighter and she did good, she really did,” Potts said, reports Unilad. “If it wasn’t for her, you know he could’ve probably stabbed all of us.”

“I’m about to break down in tears now, my heart is heavy cause I hate that happened to her," Potts said. “I was calling her name, comforting her, rubbing her head, making sure she was still alert.”

The dog was rushed to an animal hospital where she went into cardiac arrest because she had lost so much blood. She died the next day.

Williams reportedly attacked after an argument.

"He probably wasn't in his right mind but that's no excuse," Potts told WPIX. “He just flipped and hauled off and hit me in the face. That man is too big to be hitting on me.”

After Lucy lunged at Williams, Potts' three sons jumped on Williams and restrained him until police arrived, reports WPIX.

Williams was arrested and is in jail on battery charges. He may face additional charges, investigators say.

The family is now trying to raise $1,000 through GoFundMe to cover Lucy’s cremation and veterinarian costs.

There, they describe Lucy as a “brave” and “smart dog defending her family from a dangerous man.

“Thank God she was there -- who knows what would have happened.”
