A Texas mom, who used her body as a human shield to protect her son as the two fell 30 feet from a bridge after a car accident, reportedly suffered serious injuries from the accident and had to have her leg amputated.
Jennifer Duncan, 23, was driving her 8-month-old son, Daniel, to daycare in Waco, Texas, when another vehicle hit the mother's car on a busy bridge. After the minor collision, Jennifer took her son out of his car seat and left the car, trying to find a safe place to stand away from the scene of the accident, according to Inquisitr.
While Jennifer sought a place to stand, another driver lost control of their car, and hit another car which had pulled over after the accident. The car that had been parked hit Jennifer and Daniel, sending the two off of the 30-foot-tall bridge in a free fall.
Jennifer said that, as the pair fell, she prayed that Daniel would be safe, creating a "human cocoon" with her own body, and bracing for the impact. "I just remember praying, 'God, please don’t let my baby die.' It was the scariest thing you can possibly imagine. I’m just thankful my son is still alive," said the mom.

Thanks to Jennifer, Daniel sustained no injuries from the fall, getting only a scratch, but Jennifer was not as fortunate. Her body, which took the full brunt of the fall's impact, had a number of broken bones, along with a shattered pelvis and a severed leg just below the knee after the impact.
"You know Jennifer is a remarkable young lady," said her lawyer, Jonathan Stark, "and that she was able to again, whether by instinct or conscious decision, totally forgo her own safety to protect that baby is remarkable."
Jennifer will be able to walk again with the help of a prosthetic leg, according to Daily Mail. She will undergo years of physical therapy as well as treatments for her injuries, which may impact her ability to take care of Daniel.
Her medical bills are expected to be over $1 million, since it is unlikely that her insurance will cover all of her bills. The family has set up a GoFundMe in order to try and raise money for Jennifer's bills, as well as help with raising Daniel.
