An Ohio couple who conceived through IVF got the shock of their lives when they found out the fetus isn’t theirs.

Carolyn Savage and her husband Sean were desperate for a fourth baby, but were having problems conceiving since Carolyn was deemed infertile.

They successfully used IVF for their third child and decided to repeat the process by using an embryo from the previous treatment to conceive their fourth child.

After the procedure, Carolyn was ecstatic to learn that she was pregnant. But the soon-to-be mother’s joy was ruined when doctors informed her that they accidentally implanted another couple’s embryo inside her, according to LittleThings.

This judge looked an inmate square in the eyes and did something that left the entire courtroom in tears:

Although Carolyn and Sean were distraught, they understood the agony of being unable to conceive and did something totally altruistic -- Carolyn carried the other couple’s child to term.

“We’re trying to look at it as a gift for another family that eight months ago we didn’t know,” Carolyn said. “We will wonder about this child every day for the rest of our life.”

She gave up the child even though doctors told her it was her last chance of pregnancy, according to TODAY. The other couple now regards Carolyn as their “guardian angel.”

“All the emotions a woman has during pregnancy to bond with her child I haven’t had,” Shannon Morell, the child’s biological mother, said. “It’s been a very empty feeling. All the emotions from nine months are packed into that one day when I actually get to hold my baby. I never felt the baby kick -- none of that.”

However, the story doesn’t end there. Six years after the IVF mix-up, Carolyn became pregnant again at the age of 45. But this time, it was a natural conception.

“At the age of 45, after two decades without a spontaneous conception,” writes Carolyn.

“After countless ovarian stimulation cycles, multiple intrauterine inseminations and more than five IVF attempts; after six reproductive endocrinologists threw up their arms, unable to explain why we couldn’t conceive; and after one of those doctors accidentally transferred the embryos of another couple into me resulting in a pregnancy that pushed me to the limits of my sanity; I was pregnant -- the old fashioned way.”

They named their newborn son Logan.
