An upstate New York man was convicted of child pornography after he devised an elaborate scheme to trick his 14-year-old daughter into sending him nude pictures of herself so he could later sexually abuse her.

The unidentified man, 41, pleaded guilty to 12 federal counts of enticing a child to produce child pornography and receiving and sending child pornography in a Herkimer County, New York, court on March 14, according to the Daily Mail.

He is also facing charges of sexual abuse in the same court.

The charges against the man stemmed from a plot in September 2013 in which he posed as a 16-year-old boy online and began a virtual relationship with his teen daughter. The man set up fake Instagram, AOL and text messaging accounts to chat with his daughter.

Soon after starting the relationship, the father began pressuring the teen to send him explicit photos of herself, which she eventually did.

In November 2013, the girl told her online boyfriend she wanted to end their relationship because all he wanted to talk about was "sex and more sex." When the man asked for more nude photos, the teen replied, "I'm not going to do that," according to court documents.

The man then texted his daughter threatening to send the nude pictures, which she had already sent him, to her father.

"I told you that a bunch of times when we were dating that I don't like those pics and now you are threatening me that if I don't send you those then you'll send my dad the ones I sent you before?" the teen texted back. "My life is ruined."

Sometime after the two broke up online, the girl's father sent her a text message pretending to be the 16-year-old boy's mother. In the message, he told her the boy had committed suicide.

The father then confronted his daughter about the nude photos that the girl's online boyfriend had supposedly passed along to him. He began sexually molesting the girl, using the nude photos as leverage, according to the Daily Mail.

The plot unraveled when the girl reported the sexual abuse to a school nurse.

The man could face up to 250 years in prison when sentenced for the child porn convictions in July.

According to a 2005 study conducted by researchers at the University of New Hampshire, about 1 in 7, or 13 percent, of children received sexual solicitations online, the Internet Crimes Against Children Research Center reported.

About 1 in 25 children, or about 4 percent, were asked to send explicit pictures of themselves to the solicitors.
