Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas has warned his voters that if a liberal is appointed to the Supreme Court, conservatives will lose “fundamental rights.” The presidential candidate has folded this statement into a new attack ad on opponent Donald Trump (video below).
Cruz has joined his fellow Senate Republicans in promising to block U.S. President Barack Obama’s right to nominate a replacement of the late Justice Antonin Scalia.
On Feb. 13, mere hours after Scalia was pronounced dead, Cruz tweeted that, “Justice Scalia was an American hero. We owe it to him, & the Nation, for the Senate to ensure that the next President names his replacement,” according to The Atlantic.
Cruz and his fellow Republicans’ call to delay any replacement of Scalia until Obama leaves office has been criticized as a nakedly political move that could leave the Supreme Court gridlocked for up to a year, which would be unprecedented.

“The idea of not even allowing a hearing strikes a chord that is pretty deep,” Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York told The New York Times. He added that, “... after a hearing, if you’re not satisfied, it is legitimate to vote no. That’s quite different than not having a hearing or a vote.”
Cruz has made the impending battle to replace Scalia the new focus of his presidential campaign. He has cautioned voters that if Obama is allowed to select a new Justice, then our Supreme Court will become a liberal majority that would undermine conservative values.
“We are one justice away from losing our fundamental rights in this country,” Cruz told reporters, according to Reuters.

We’re one justice away from a radical five-justice liberal majority that would effectively write the Second Amendment out of the constitution… that would mandate unlimited abortion on demand that would include partial-birth with government funding and no restrictions whatsoever…. that would undermine the religious liberty of Americans across this country — who would be forced to choose between violating their faith or paying millions of dollars of fines to Obamacare.
The Cruz campaign has debuted a new ad attacking Donald Trump, featuring video of the business mogul asserting that he was pro-choice on abortion in 2002. The implication is that Trump is a liberal in conservative clothing.
Cruz spokesman Rick Tyler has framed the campaign’s new direction as a referendum on who will choose the most conservative new justice.
“If they want a conservative justice, they would they would pick Ted Cruz,” Tyler told The New York Times. “If they want to spin the roulette wheel, they would pick Donald Trump.”
