Florida man Joseph Ramos faces burglary and tampering charges after police discovered two stolen gold necklaces in his stomach.
The 21-year-old was arrested on Dec. 11, the day after a home invasion in Safety Harbor was reported. He was discovered in a stolen vehicle and pulled over for reckless driving before police booked him.
Various items taken from the home he had broken into were also in the vehicle.
When Ramos arrived at the station, he was ordered to walk though a SecurPass X-Ray, which displayed a large dark mass in his stomach.
Ramos underwent surgery at a local hospital to remove both chains, and the jewelry was identified by the burglary victim.
Some have expressed concerns that taxpayers will pay for the surgery, not Ramos.
The young man was charged with grand theft and tampering with evidence, and is currently being held at Pinellas County Jail on $15,000 bail.
Jail officials have used X-ray machines since June to detect concealed items on inmates.
