One World Trade Center is supposed to represent some of the best things about America: freedom, strength and resilience. Apparently it currently also represents some of the worst things about America, though: sexism, racism and disrespect for others.

According to reports, the bathrooms at the still-under-construction “Freedom Tower” are littered with graffiti that contains ethnic slurs, sexist terms and even questions the President of the United States, Barack Obama.

During April of last year when One World Trade Center became the tallest building in New York City, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo released a statement that read in part: “The new World Trade Center is more than just a skyscraper: it is a symbol of the enduring spirit of the City and State of New York, representing our commitment to rebuilding stronger than before. I thank the many contractors, iron workers and laborers for their hard work, without which this milestone would not have been possible."

The same people the governor was thanking in his statement less than a year ago may be responsible for the offensive comments that are written throughout the 104-story building.

So what exactly do the messages scrawled in the building’s bathrooms say? An insider says: “Most of it’s racial. Most of it — I mean, there’s a lot of stuff with the N-word. But pretty much every race is covered: Spanish people, Irish people, Jewish people, women.” There is also at least one message asking for President Obama to produce his birth certificate.

There are more than 1,000 people working on construction at the building and although the graffiti, which is mostly written using black markers that are readily available at the site, gets painted over from time to time, it keeps coming back. The building has been under construction since 2006 and it is set to open in 2014.
