After police say they caught a Florida mother shoplifting at Wal-Mart, she ran away, leaving her baby behind in the cart (video below.)

A clip of the incident published April 24 reveals authorities stopped the mother as she walked to the parking lot, leaving the shopping cart holding the infant inside the store, near the exit.

The child stares at the camera operator while employees and police run to catch up with the baby’s mother.

At first, the woman denied stealing anything, stating she had receipts for all her purchases. After more questions, she changed her story and tried to get out of trouble by offering to pay for everything.

Police arrested the woman and contacted the child’s father to pick the infant up.

It’s not the first time a mother has left their child behind during a theft.

In May 2015 a California mother left her 4-year-old girl, Nae Nae, behind in her house after a burglar broke in, KPIX reports.

The mother, Bliss Yeager, was downstairs with the girl’s baby sibling, while the 4-year-old was upstairs.

Yeager had to think fast, leaving behind her other child momentarily to get help.

“I was able to take a picture of him, [I was] calling 911, by that time I got up, I mean, he was walking toward upstairs like he was living here, like it’s his house,” said Yeager. “Then that was my chance to go out -- because I had my baby and that was my chance to go outside but my fear was my daughter was upstairs, [my] 4-year-old daughter. So that was the scary part.”

When police arrived, they found the child sitting at the top of the stairs.

“He went in my little sister’s room who was in the room by herself,” said brother Jess Yeager, who was out with his father at the time. “My mom rushed outside to try to contact neighbors and stuff to get some help.”

The 4-year-old told officers the burglar was hiding in her bedroom closet. Officials arrested the suspect, a 21-year-old homeless man named  Demaria Lopez, but not before Lopez put up a fight.

He was charged with burglary and resisting arrest.
