A woman in Southern California reportedly discovered the decomposing body of a man in the trunk of her Lexus Saturday while she was parked next to a Wal-Mart, reports NBC Los Angeles.
The body has been identified as Miguel Angel Perez, 33, a man the woman reportedly knew.
The woman, who was initially questioned and considered a suspect by police, allegedly called 911 at about 4:40 p.m. to report that she had smelled something strange all day and found the dead body in the trunk of her gold Lexus GS 300 when a shopper went to put bags in her car. She reportedly recognized the man as her neighbor and began “freaking out,” according to CBS Los Angeles.
“(It’s) very unusual, I mean, it’s one-of-a-kind,” said Riverside Police Sgt. Dave Amador. “We do get bodies in trunks, but when they open it and say they know them and didn’t know they were in there, that’s unusual.”
Autopsy results are still pending, but police say they think Perez was probably killed in Pomona, where the owner of the car lived. They still don’t know how the body got there or for long it had been in the trunk.
“It’s hot out so it’s hard to say how long the body had been there,” Amador said. “It won’t take long for a body to decompose in this weather.”
