A Brooklyn woman has been charged with decapitating a mother of four and spreading her body parts across two counties on Long Island, New York after a dispute over the rent, according to police.
Chinelle LaToya Thompson Browne, 27 and a Guyanese immigrant, reportedly decided to stop paying rent to Leah Cuevas, 42, because the building in which they both lived lacked hot water and had insufficient electricity, reports the New York Post. The two women fought on July 5 over the unpaid rent, and neighbors say they heard Browne scream loudly.
Police say Cuevas repeatedly stabbed Browne in the throat and chest and then cut off her head with “a sharp instrument.” They believe she then dismembered her body and proceeded to scatter Browne’s limbs and torso across Nassau and Suffolk counties.
Browne’s last words were, “No Lee! No Lee! What you doing? Oh no! Oh no! … I’m sorry, I’m sorry,” according to prosecutors.
Cuevas was not the landlord of the building, but had assumed the responsibility after the owner died last year. She had not been charged with defrauding tenants, but took her role seriously and reportedly took offense when Browne announced her intentions to move out of the Brooklyn building. The women also reportedly had an argument over an unpaid $200 electricity bill, reports the Daily News.
Investigators discovered Browne’s torso in a wooded lot near a ferry terminal on July 9. Her legs were found nearby, and her arms were uncovered a few days later at a location about 25 miles away. The mother’s severed head was ultimately found at a home on July 17.
Cuevas pleaded not guilty and is being held without bail. Judge G. Ann Spelman called her act “the worst conduct that humans can be capable of.”
The victim’s husband, Dale Browne, and her four children are in Guyana and had planned to move to New York to be with Browne, who moved a year ago to work at a department store in Manhattan. He told reporters, “When the prosecutor described the words that she screamed out, I can hear those words. It’s animalistic. It’s a beast that did this.”
