Woman Confronts Brother Who Sexually Abused Her

| by Michael Doherty

In an emotional courtroom confrontation, an upstate New York woman came face to face with her older brother who faces prison for years of sexual abuse he inflicted on her when she was a child.

Kathryn "Katie" Bailey, 23, cried while making a powerful address to her brother, James Bailey, 31, in a courtroom in Syracuse on April 6, Daily Mail reports. James was found guilty of two felony counts of sexual abuse, and will serve 32 years in prison.

James began abusing Katie when she was 9 years old and continued to do so until she was 12. At age 17, James often took care of Katie because the siblings' parents were frequently away from the house for work -- that is when the abuse started.

While James was in court, he was asked what the first word was that came to mind when thinking about his relationship with Katie, and he responded by saying, "Curiosity."

"It was sexual abuse, it was not curiosity," Katie said in court on April 6, as her brother was just feet away. "Do you really think so little of what you did to me?"

"After hearing that word, 'curiosity,' the trauma for me continued," said Katie. "Just when I though the memories and the way I felt was enough to make me cold and numb inside, you managed to damage and hurt me again."

"How does the possibility of 32 years sound to you?" Katie asked. "That's 11,680 days and 280,000 hours. I'm positive that number will matter to you."

"However long I live, I will have a life sentence," she said. "I have the rest of my life to bear the weight of this abuse, and that is that. I will never forget what you have done to me. I will never forget what it felt like through those dark days."

"To be honest, I'm not sure how to end this," she continued, adding that she had been waiting for this day for years. "I suppose a goodbye is in order, but I'd like to say one last thing. I don't hate you. I hate what you did."

"But I hope you and your self-centered, egotistical a** remembers my last word to you and you'll be reminded every single day that you're in prison for your curiosity."

James previously turned down a plea deal that would have given him 13 to 15 years in prison, and would not have required Katie to testify in court. A judge has banned James from contacting his sister for the next 40 years.

Now, Katie said she feels ready to move on from the abuse that reportedly caused her to have seizures and emotional issues from the trauma, according to WSYR-TV.

"I decided I don't want to be a scared little girl anymore in this grown body," she said. "I'm about to go to college. I had this mindset that I want to change my life."

Katie is pursuing a second degree in criminology, and plans to devote her life to helping children who have been the victims of sexual abuse.
