A mother said she was informed of her daughter’s murder through a text message sent by the man who allegedly raped and killed her.
Veronica Rodriguez, who moved from Lehigh Acres, Florida, to Philadelphia in 2015, was allegedly sexually assaulted and then strangled to death by 25-year-old Juan Camacho on May 9.
The couple had been dating since October 2015, WZVN reports, and they broke up not long before Camacho reportedly took Rodriguez’s life.
According to Rodriguez’s relatives, the 27-year-old mother had last spoken to her mother, Maribel Guzman, on May 8 via FaceTime. Rodriguez told Guzman she had just split up with Camacho.
"She's a good, good woman," Guzman told WZVN of her late daughter. "Always happy, always bringing the family together."
During Guzman's conversation with her daughter, Camacho reportedly sent a Facebook message to Guzman to ask for advice about getting back together with Rodriguez.
However, the following morning, Camacho sent another Facebook message.
"He text me and said 'I'm sorry I killed your daughter,” Guzman said.
According to Police Capt. Robert Ritchie, there was no indicated history of domestic abuse between Camacho and Rodriguez, WCAU reports. The victim’s four children, ages 5, 8, 10 and 12, were reportedly sleeping at the home when the murder took place.
At 2:15 a.m. on May 9, Camacho called 9-1-1 to report his crime. During the call, he informed the dispatcher that he was suicidal. He left the area in his car but stayed in contact with emergency dispatchers, so authorities were able to track his path, Philadelphia Media Network notes.
Police caught up with Camacho and arrested him. He has since been charged with murder, sexual assault, rape and abuse of a corpse.
Rodriguez’s sister, Vivian Saez, told WZVN that it would cost about $6,000 to bring Rodriguez’s body back to Florida.
"We want her back so much because it’s a family that grew up together for years," Saez said.
Harvest Ministry in Lehigh Acres is accepting donations to help bring her body back to her family.
"I'm still in denial," Guzman said. "I need to see her, and I wanna bring her back home because she's in Philadelphia."
All four of Rodriguez's kids are staying with family in Philadelphia. One of the kid's fathers will reportedly drive up to Philadelphia and bring the kids back down to Florida.
