New disturbing details on what caused the death of a 4-year-old Texas girl have been released.
According to an arrest warrant, which was released on March 29, Jeri Quezada, 30, initially told emergency services that her daughter Leiliana had fallen while taking a shower, Fox 4 News reports. But once police took the mother in for questioning, her story changed several times.
Authorities reportedly arrived at the Grand Prairie home on March 13 and found Leiliana unresponsive in the hallway, with several bruises on her face. They heard Quezada yelling,“Oh my God,” while her boyfriend sat quietly inside the home.
Quezada told police Leiliana came home with the bruises on her face after staying with a friend for several days. She added that the child fell while taking a shower, and they found her unconscious.
However, the mother eventually admitted to officers that she went to her boyfriend’s home on March 12 with Leiliana and her 18-month-old son. According to Quezada, she and her boyfriend beat Leiliana with a belt and bamboo stick because she drank her little brother’s juice.
The couple then went to the bathroom to shoot up heroin while the children were in the living room. Quezada told officers she left Leiliana with her boyfriend because she knew the girl couldn't be seen in public with all the bruises on her face.
Quezada said her boyfriend called her and told her he had tied Leiliana up because she was making herself throw up. Quezada returned to her boyfriend’s home to pick Leiliana up, and the couple used more heroin.
When Quezada went to the closet, she found Leiliana tied with her wrists behind her back, hanging from a coat rod, which made it impossible for her to sit down. She took her daughter out from the closet and attempted to feed her.
The child was having trouble swallowing. Quezada slapped Leiliana on her chest and hit her in the back of the head. Her boyfriend then forcibly poured Pedialyte down Leiliana’s throat.
Leiliana ran to the bathroom to throw up again but only made it to the kitchen. Quezada’s boyfriend then reportedly grabbed the child by the throat and lifted her off the ground before shoving her against the wall. He then cursed at her for vomiting and threw her back in the closet, according to Quezada.
When Leiliana was let out of the closet once again, she went to take a shower. Quezada said she went to her room to change into her pajamas, and then she heard her boyfriend in the bathroom yelling, “Get you some of this,” before hearing her daughter fall.
An autopsy found that Leiliana suffered extensive bruising from head to toe and had whip marks on her back. She also had severe bruising on her buttocks and on the back of her thighs. Her death was ruled a homicide by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office as a result of blunt force trauma to the abdomen and head.
Quezada was charged with injury to a child and is being held on a $500,000 bond. Police are still investigating and more charges could be pending.
