Rafael McCloud escaped from Warren County Jail in Mississippi on March 2, but his bid for freedom only lasted eight days. The 34-year-old, who had recently been indicted for the murder of 69-year-old Sharon Wilson as well as sexual battery, rape, arson, home invasion, and being a felon in possession of a firearm, was found dead in the bathtub of Vicksburg, Mississippi.
McCloud took the family hostage and tied up the husband and wife, although there was also a child in the home. The couple, who has not been identified, managed to get loose and shot McCloud to death. The man sustained a non-life threatening stab wound, but the mother and child were unharmed, MS News Now reported.
“This is certainly not how we wanted this to end,” Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace told The Vicksburg Post. “Our goal was to take him back into custody and have him stand before a jury in Warren County. But he brought this upon himself.
“We are incredibly relieved this family was not seriously injured and they were able to protect themselves this morning,” Pace said. “It’s been a long week for this community and we appreciate the cooperation of the public as we have pursued this community.”
Vicksburg Police Chief Walter Armstrong said he believes that McCloud had help when he was on the road. “He had on tennis shoes; nice, white tennis shoes and a pair of blue jeans, so there is some indication someone has been helping him or he stole those items,” the chief said. “But the shoes looked to be the exact size he wears.”
An autopsy has been ordered for McCloud.
