N.C. Teacher Accused Of Sex With Student Is Forbidden From Seeing Her Children, Judge Says

| by Brendan Kelly

At a recent court appearance, a North Carolina teacher was reportedly banned from interacting with children -- including her own. The judge also ordered that her bail be tripled.

Laura Garrigus, 30, a high school science teacher in Fayetteville, North Carolina, has been arrested after reportedly having sexual relations with a 17-year-old female student. The student told police that Garrigus touched and kissed her inappropriately in a car, at home, and in the bathroom at an undisclosed location, according to the Fay Observer.

Garrigus has been charged with two counts of sexual offenses and four counts of taking indecent liberties with a student. She has since resigned from her teaching job.

If Garrigus, a mother of three, makes bail, she will be forbidden from having contact with any children under the age of 18, including her own, WTVD reports.

“Do you understand that?” District Court Judge Cheri Siler-Mack asked Garrigus in court, according to WTVD.

“Not even my own children?” Garrigus asked the judge.

“You will not be around any children under the age of 18,” Siler-Mack said.

According to investigators, each count against Garrigus represents one sexual encounter involving Garrigus and the student between October and December 2015.

The teacher’s bond was set at $16,000, but during her court appearance on Feb. 8 it was raised to $50,000.

She is scheduled to appear in court again in March.
