Video: Fort Lee, New Jersey Bans Texting While Walking

| by Michael Allen

The city of Fort Lee, New Jersey has declared that any pedestrian caught texting, while walking, will get an $85 fine for jaywalking (video below).

Fort Lee Police Chief Thomas Ripoli told ABC News: “It’s a big distraction. Pedestrians aren’t watching where they are going and they are not aware.”

Ripoli said there had been three fatal pedestrian accidents in Fort Lee this year and he hopes the new policy will promote public safety.

A study conducted by two professors at Stony Brook University in New York found that texters were 60% more likely to wander off course than non-texters.
