Two men feared for their lives after a failed robbery attempt at an Orlando apartment Tuesday afternoon.
A 22-year-old University of Central Florida student was the latest victim in a string of robberies that have been reported in the college campus. He answered a knock at the door and two men stormed in, forced him to the ground and pointed a weapon at his head.
As the robbers ransacked the appartment, the student’s roommate decided to take matters into her own hands. She retrieved her handgun from her room and pointed it at the robbers. The perpetrator dropped his weapon - which turned out to be a pellet gun - and they both ran away.
“She brought a gun to a pellet gun fight,” Orange County Lieutenant Paul Hopkins told WESH-TV. “Typically, we ask people to comply with the orders of a robber. That way they just get the product and get out.
“But on this occasion, obviously, the female felt that she had an advantage over them, was able to get her real gun and get these two bad guys out of her apartment.”
A search for the suspects, who were described as two black males in their early 20s, ensued but authorities could not find the culprits. Police said no one was injured during the incident.
This is just the latest incident in a series of robberies reported in the area. WKMG reported that unlocked apartments at UCF’s main campus were burglarized Monday night while students were asleep. Police said the robbers took electronics and other items.
It cannot be confirmed at this time if the culprits involved with Tuesday’s robbery attempt are connected with the break-ins at the apartments of the school’s main campus.
Police are continuing their investigation and are asking anyone with information to contact the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.
