A man attacked and fatally stabbed three children on the first day of school in China on Monday before killing himself by jumping off a building, state media reported.

As children went back to school again this week, an attacker identified only by his surname, Chen, broke into Dongfang Primary School in Hubei province around 10:20 a.m., according to Xinhua news agency.

He stabbed eight students and a teacher before taking his own life.

Three students died. Six other victims were hospitalized, Xinhua reported.

The news agency said it wasn’t immediately clear how Chen gained access to the building.

China saw a series of mass stabbings and attacked with hammer and cleavers from 2010 to 2012, CNN reported.

On Dec. 14, 2012, the same day as the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., a 36-year-old man in China's Henan province stabbed 23 children and an elderly woman at Chenpeng village primary school. All of the victims survived.
