A teenage mother and older friend will not spend any time behind bars after the two pleaded guilty to felony child endangerment in a Houston, Texas courtroom Monday.

KHOU News reports 17-year-old Shadreon Jefferson and friend, 25-year-old Shamara Batiste, admitted to getting Jefferson’s 23-month-old daughter drunk on vodka and then leaving the child in the care of a grandparent.

Police charged the two women in March following the February incident.

That’s when the child’s paternal grandmother dialed 911 shortly after Jefferson and Batiste dropped the child at her home. She said the little girl was vomiting, shivering and her eyes were rolling back in her head, according to KPRC News. That story describes Batiste as an aunt of the toddler.

When police arrived they said the child smelled of alcohol and had her rushed to a nearby hospital where it was determined she had a blood alcohol level of .268 — nearly three times the legal driving limit for adults — and was suffering from acute alcohol poisoning

Police said Batiste later admitted that the young child had consumed half of an alcoholic beverage she had prepared that consisted of a mixer and vodka.

Police said Batiste “laughed when speaking about the complainant consuming alcohol,” according to the KPRC News report.

Children's Protective Service placed the daughter and two other children in the care of a relative while they conducted an investigation.

Batiste was said to have estimated the quantity of vodka consumed by the girl to be about six shots. She reportedly said the girl fell asleep after drinking the beverage.

A judge sentenced Jefferson Monday to three years deferred adjudication after she pleaded guilty to the endangerment charge. Batiste also pleaded guilty and was sentenced to two years probation.
