Texas Parents Accused Of Keeping Son Locked In Apartment To Protect Their Other Children

A Texas couple is accused of kidnapping and locking up their adopted son in order to protect their other children.

Jenifer Thyssen, 40, and her husband, Dane, 39, have been arrested for allegedly locking up their 22-year-old adopted son, Koystya Thyssen, in a garage apartment at their Dripping Springs, Texas, home by himself for more than four years, the Inquisitr reports.

Police only learned of the situation after the young man reportedly used a screwdriver to break out of the garage and was arrested for burglarizing a neighbor’s home.

According to an affidavit, Koystya explained that the apartment was equipped with a toilet, microwave, sink and refrigerator. He was let out once a week, usually on Wednesdays, to see a counselor and to shower, the Austin American-Statesman reported.

Jenifer and Dane provided Koystya with one box of food per week, which was delivered on Saturdays, he told police.

The parents, who admitted to holding Koystya captive, said the living situation was necessary to protect the neighbors and their other children from their son’s bizarre behavior. Defense attorney Perry Minton told TWC News Austin that Koystya is “a sexual predator with predatory tendencies,” and the family had no other option but to confine him.

Koystya was adopted 10 years ago from Kazakhstan, where he was abused as a child, and he now has diminished mental capacity, Dane’s brother told KXAN-TV.

When detectives interviewed Koystya after his arrest, he told them all about being locked up by his parents. He said he barely got presents during holidays, never had dinner with the family and never spent any time with the other kids in the main home, the Statesman reports.

According to the police report, when the family went on vacation, Dane Thyssen would stay behind and would eat dinner with his adopted son, but was always locked inside the garage afterward. Koystya said he doesn’t have any friends or other relatives in the U.S.

At the Hays County Jail, the parents are being held on $350,000 bail each and charged with kidnapping, while Koystya is held on $10,000 bail and charged with burglary.
