Teen Stormy Rich Stops Bullies, Gets Punished
Orlando, Florida high school student Stormy Rich, 18, had been riding on a middle school bus to get to Umatilla High School.
On the bus, Rich was shocked by how some of the younger middle school girls were treating a student with mental disabilities.
Rich complained about the bullying to the bus driver, then to school officials, but says the adults took no action.
Rich told Fox 35 about the mean middle school bullies: "They would be mean to her, tell her she couldn't sit on certain spots on the bus. They were giving her food that they put in her mouth. I actually had to tell her to spit it out because she didn't understand."
"When the school didn't do anything, I told the girls, if the school didn't do anything, I was going to do something."
However, that warning got Rich into trouble with school officials, who have now banned her from riding the bus.
Amazingly, the school is standing behind its response, refused to give details and then complained how only one side of the story was being told.
Lake County Schools spokesman Christopher Patton said: "I can't comment about student discipline, you've got one side of the story. ... There are other parents that are involved in this."

School screwed up; hide the
School screwed up; hide the facts blame the student. Another lengthy lawsuit the school will loose and will say "We will change". Do we wonder why charter schools, Christian schools, private schools are surging in enrollment? We have jackasses running the school systems.
Bless her heart, I believe
Bless her heart, I believe since she is 18 she may be able to become a legal advocate for the girl on the bus. Seriously I'd like to see that, the knuckleheads on the school board would find out what it means to get their bones picked clean by lawyers. Nobody is more sympathetic that a mentally challenged person, and that will almost always extends to those who defend them.
Zero tolerance rules are
Zero tolerance rules are bullshit. I do try to refrain from swearing on here, but the more I see of this zero tolerance crap, the more it makes me want to puke.
Heaven forbid the administrators in school take time to figure out what happened and make sure justice is served.
I don't think she did it for
I don't think she did it for the approval anyway. People like that, they can't stand injustice and they don't care who they have to stand up to to stop it, whether it's a bunch of bullies or the entire school. We need more folks like that in the world.
I wouldn't think we needed
I wouldn't think we needed further proof of how horrible our school system has become. But there it is again.
For years, I have been saying that education is far too important for its administration to be left to "professional educators". In this case, I suspect they are afraid of the parents of the guilty kids so they do what they have to do to cover their cowardice. Punish the innocent, ignore the guilty, and pretend they did it for "good reasons".
If I had children in school today, I'd have them in private schools or home school them. For sure, they would not be in the disaster zone public education has become.
James, the problem is that
James, the problem is that the rules are not made by professional educators, but bureaucrats that are in elected positions; the school board.
I do not, nor shall I ever agree that homeschooling is a good idea, since the quality of homeschooling is almost always religious leaning (the churches have schools for that indoctrination) and usually substandard by modern standards of education, not that many courses are being taught at the appropriate level, but then again, blame the ones that make the rules; the bureaucrats, not the teachers.
Teachers want to teach, but are over worked, underpaid, unappreciated by the politicians and most parents and given less and less discretionary power every day.
When I was in school, a teacher had the power to take the children aside and get to the bottom of the issue and actually do something about it, but no longer. And parents are as much to blame as the school administrators that have screwed up the schools. Hell, we have school systems in some states wanting to teach creationism in science class and revise American history to indicate that this is a Christian nation, both of which are not only wrong but will screw up the kids for ever getting into a good college, if they so choose.
The insanity principle is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results. The far right, the far left, vegans, creationists and other extremists believe in the insanity principle, religiously.

Show me your statistics. Homeschooled students consistently outperform public schooled children on national norm referenced tests.
Then why are so many of them
Then why are so many of them creationists?
Homeschooling also denies these children diversified socialization, which is harmful to their development.
By the way, where are YOUR statistics?
The insanity principle is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results. The far right, the far left, vegans, creationists and other extremists believe in the insanity principle, religiously.
FOR THE LOVE OF GOD. As a
FOR THE LOVE OF GOD. As a product of both homeschooling and the public school system, I feel obligated to point out the incredible falsity of your statements.
Your so-called "creationists" are products of what they are taught. Public school teaches evolution, parents in their homes teach what they know to be truth. Furthermore, public schools teach children what to think, whereas homeschooling teaches children HOW to think so they can make educated decisions on their own.
Now about this "diversified socialization". When I was being homeschooled, I was involved in orchestra, speech, theatre, dance, volleyball, basketball, and choir; with other people. How many public school students can say that they have done all that through school? I also had my first job at age 14. This could happen because I spent only as much time per day to learn what I needed to learn and then got on with my life.
When I entered the public school system as a freshman in high school, I was placed in the most advanced classes possible. I spent 4 years in the AP and Advanced course programs, and graduated with a 4.0 GPA. Furthermore, due to my basic elementary education and problem solving skills which I acquired while being homeschooled, I received a 30 out of a possible 36 on my ACT.
So please, before you generalize about a lifestyle about which you know nothing, do not judge it.
As a side note, the first and
As a side note, the first and only time I was ever bullied was in public high school. Never before had I experienced children treating each other that way. Homeschooled children do not act that way. Most of them are among the most well-mannered people you will ever encounter.
"Homeschooling also denies
"Homeschooling also denies these children diversified socialization, which is harmful to their development."
This is often trotted out by those opposed to homeschooling. The opposite is in fact true. School keeps children isolated with others of their same age, in regimented environments. Given that homeschoooled kids are not kept sheltered in the classroom, they have more opportunity to socialize with a greater diversity of the public.
Here is one of my statistics, Where are YOURS?

Ahh, yes, the HSLDA. That's
Ahh, yes, the HSLDA. That's like defending creationism by using the bible, or defending animal rights terrorism by using Peta doctrine.
How about something that has NO connection to the issue and is undeniably neutral with no agenda one way or the other?
Nice try, but you fail in that the HSLDA has an agenda supporting homeschooling.
Schools do almost nothing in the way of "sheltering" children. They learn to be able to communicate and understand people outside of their family unit. That is, again, the major disadvantage, besides the failure to insure a consistent standard for those teaching at home.
Until homeschoolers are trained to the standard of a proper teacher, then they will be the lesser of the choices. Homeschoolers are not required to have a degree in teaching or even the most rudimentary college education; what about that qualifies them to teach the headier subjects?
Again, as one person pointed out, the curriculum is determined by the individual parent doing the homeschooling, which is why many homeschooled children are taught anti-science subjects in place of science. And those subjects are going to be critical in every generation coming up as it has been in every generation since the end of the dark ages.

Perhaps show us your
Perhaps show us your statistics?
I think it really depends on the parent who decides to teach the child. I'm sure that intelligent parents make the choice more often, so of course it would be expected for them to outperform public schooled children. Although this is only an assumption.
There are exceptions to the
There are exceptions to the rule, but that is what the HSLDA uses...the exceptions, not the rule.
And, sadly, very few of the parents choosing to home-school their children actually are qualified to do so.
Part of the reason that there are those home-schooled children that do outperform children educated in both public and private schools, is because of the rare, highly and properly educated parents that do the home-schooling, but there are far more public school educated children that outperform even those in private school as well as the home-schooled children; and they tend to have better general socialization than home-schooled children and will tend to get along better once out in the real world.
I really have to wonder how many who support homeschooling here in this forum are, themselves, home-schooled and how many of those proponents of home-schooling are just fed up with, and don't know what else to do about, the way that the public education system has been deteriorated by politicking and overpriced administrators that are not educators.

"I really have to wonder how many who support homeschooling here in this forum are, themselves, home-schooled..."
Well, you've got one right here. I'm really glad you decided to completely ignore my previous comment. I would really like to know what you have to say in response.
Of course depend on what they
Of course depend on what they choose to teach. If they choose to teach nothing (like some public schools, apparently), then the homeschooler will not learn much at all.
Sounds like a case of "we
Sounds like a case of "we don't need no stinkin' high school student telling us how to conduct our business ".
This might be a time for Stormy to file a legal action against the school...as a concerned citizen...and maybe then they'll get some balls!
Any good Civil Liberties folks listening?
Why does the school ASSUME
Why does the school ASSUME that "going to do something" couldn't mean she herself would call the girl's parents, a lawyer, the police or the media?
It's a sign of how limited the school official's critical thinking skills are IF they blindly ignore the REAL bullies & then feebly punish the one person who DID show some moral fiber.
This teenage girl is to be commended & the school officials should be thoroughly ashamed of their original stupidity & then their refusal to apologize for their mistakes.

Well, this is in Florida; a
Well, this is in Florida; a backward, regressive-thinking, bible belt state that has become rife with corruption and religious extremism.
Because of that, doing the right thing is always seen as the wrong thing to do.
This world needs more young people willing to stand and defend those who cannot defend themselves. In the middle ages, that was considered to be "knightly virtues"; something that we have, quite sadly, forgotten as a society.

Agreed. Shut them down one
Agreed. Shut them down one and all. No citizen should be forced to pay for others.
BAD idea. Just as bad as the
BAD idea. Just as bad as the reaction of the school to this girl for standing up to bullies. Knee-jerk reactions are ALWAYS a bad idea.
Were you educated in the public school system or were you the product of homeschooling or private schools?
The fact that our taxes are supposed to pay for these "infrastructure programs", such as schools, roads, military, police, fire, etc., is indicative of our nature as a society. We work together as one nation to build a better life for ourselves and our children and our grandchildren. We NEED all of these programs in order to take care of ourselves and each other as a community.
You DO NOT fix this particular problem by eliminating public schools, you fix the problem by seeing what the core problems are and fixing only those problems. In this case, bad administrative practices.
What you are suggesting is akin to replacing your whole house because it needs a new roof. Not a smart way to go, but it is a half-step, knee jerk reactionary measure that will blow up in your face, like all half-step, knee jerk reactionary measures are.
Homeschooling is substandard and does not provide enough for the student and only a very few can afford private schools. And if we use a voucher program for all that cannot afford private schools, then we are back to tax money paying for the education system.
We need common sense returned to school administration rather than knee-jerk reactionaries being put in charge. We need smaller class sizes and MORE teachers being put to work at their chosen vocation, TEACHING, rather than treating them as herders and babysitters, and we need parents to step up and get involved in their children's education without coddling them, as the parents of these bullies obviously have done.
The insanity principle is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results. The far right, the far left, vegans, creationists and other extremists believe in the insanity principle, religiously.

Our tax money already pays for the education system. Except homeschools, who still pay for public education.
Another miscarriage of
Another miscarriage of justice by cowardly school authorities who refuse to take action regarding a case of bullying against a disabled child, that this brave student, Stormy Rich, decided to she had to intervene to put a stop to the bullying. Why Rich gets punished is simply ludicrous.
