Tennessee Mom Faces Murder Charge In Death Of 2-Year-Old Son

| by Jonathan Constante

A teenage mom in Memphis, Tennessee, has been charged with first degree murder after a cruel and unusual form of punishment resulted in the death of her 2-year-old son.

Raven Campbell, 19, took a very unorthodox approach to disciplining her son, Jermyle, on Saturday afternoon, WMC Action News reported.

Police say the teen mom put the boy under a large mattress as a form of punishment. After 30 minutes, she lifted the bed and found her infant son unconscious and not breathing, Mad World News reported.

The boy was rushed to Le Bonheur Children’s hospital where he died just moments after he arrived. The mother was questioned and confessed to what she had done to her son. She was originally charged with child abuse and neglect, but charges were upgraded Monday to first degree murder, according to WMC Action News.

Family members had allegedly tried to remove the child from the mother’s custody twice last year. Both attempts failed, according to officials.

Campbell will appear in court next week. She is being held without bond.
