A Memphis, Tennessee, teenager was fatally shot after he stopped to help a woman who was having car trouble.

The 17-year-old male responded to a 35-year-old woman’s wave for help from the side of the road on the evening of Jan. 7, WREG reports. She had an infant with her in the vehicle.

The teen and another, aged 15, got out of their vehicle to help the woman.

At around the same time, two suspects exited another vehicle, approached the woman’s car on foot, and fired at the teens, according to a Memphis police news release obtained by ABC News.

The 17-year-old Good Samaritan was fatally shot. He was found lying in the street by police.

The female motorist, the 15-year-old and an 18-year-old woman who was with the teens, were hit by bullet fragments. They were taken to the hospital in non-critical condition.

The infant suffered injuries to the face.

The suspects fled on foot and a police investigation is ongoing.
