A 16-year-old from Virginia was charged with the murder of an 8-year-old Richmond boy who died protecting his 12-year-old sister from being raped on Thursday.
The boy and his sister were originally reported to be 9 and 11, respectively, but the family has come out and corrected the ages.
The suspect, who was not indentified because he is a minor, has been charged with murder and strangulation, WSAV reported. It is unclear whether he was charged as an adult.
Police responded to a report that two juveniles had been assaulted at the 200 block of Brandon Road at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday.
Martin “Marty” Cobb, 8, and his 12-year-old sister were playing outside their home when they were approached by an assailant who tried to rape the girl, their aunt told police.
When Marty tried to intervene, the attacker beat him and allegedly strangled him to death.
"He was a lovely little boy. He didn't deserve this," Geraldine Pitchford, the children's aunt, told NBC News.
With help from neighbors, police were able to identify the suspect.
"The community's response has been tremendous," Waugh told NBC News. "They played a very important role in gathering information to lead us to this point."
