An Antioch, California, teacher’s aide was arrested after a video (below) surfaced that showed her assaulting a 9-year-old boy.
On Jan. 6, Kamaljot Kaur, 26, was arrested at her home after police responded to a child abuse report relating to the video, KRON reports.
The video shows Kaur, an employee of the Tobinworld School in Antioch, walking up to the boy and striking him on the side of the head. Later in the clip, the teacher can be seen shoving the child to the floor. The video concludes with the boy standing behind a chair as two men are seen laughing. One of them falls to the floor.
“Officers contacted and interviewed school staff members, other student witnesses, and the victim, a 9-year-old resident of Oakland,” authorities said in a statement.
“After conducting interviews and reviewing the cell phone recording of the incident, Officers determined that a felony child abuse had occurred," the statement continued.
The other school employees seen in the clip have not been identified.
“Tobinworld takes this event extremely seriously and will take all necessary actions once we have the full facts in this matter,” the school said in a statement, the Contra Costa Times reports.
According to an Antioch Unified School District official, a support team was sent to the school following the incident to talk with students and their parents.
The school is a non-profit facility for children and young adults with behavioral and developmental issues.
The school's website notes that “typically students have been classified as severely emotionally disabled, autistic or developmentally disabled,” according to KRON.
Attorney Peter Alfert, whose firm is investigating the school on behalf of a number of parents, said he was “appalled” by the clip.
“What is on the video is incredibly disturbing," he told the Contra Costa Times. "To think that could be a classroom in the state of California is beyond belief.
“What is shown in the video is an out-of-control situation with some students physically abused and others subjected to it. This needs to be turned over to the DA. This is no school situation I've seen before."
