A Florida teenager is facing aggravated child abuse charges after he allegedly abused an infant child.

Steven Jones, 19, of Pinellas County, is accused of beating a 47-day-old baby. The child suffered a skull fracture, bleeding on the brain and a shift of the brain due to abusive head trauma, police said.

The baby also had several bruises down his back and spine and another on the right side of his stomach, WFLA reported. Police said the bruises looked like fingerprints caused by gripping the baby too tightly.

The child is currently on a ventilator.

Neighbors later identified Jones as the baby’s father, ABC Action News reported. Jones had recently moved into the neighborhood with his girlfriend, and the child’s grandmother told neighbors it was all an accident.

"She was telling me about it, her son was a good guy and what happened was the baby slipped and hit his head on the tub," Ike, one of Jones' neighbors, told ABC Action News.

Jones also told police the baby slipped out his arms and hit his head on the bathtub. However, the Child Protection Team said the infant’s injuries appear to be from a high force impact and are not consistent with Jones’ explanation.

The police affidavit also notes that Jones did not seek medical attention for the child until later that evening, according to WFLA.

"He needs to be locked up,” Wane Nelson, another neighbor, told ABC Action News. “He needs to stay right there in jail where he is at, and they don't need to let him out.”

Jones was arrested on June 22 and is being held on $50,000 bond.
