Should NYC Livery Cab Drivers Carry Guns?

| by Mark Berman Opposing Views

There is a proposal in New York City to allow livery cab drivers to carry guns on the job.

The New York Daily News reports that the driver group Livery Base Owners has asked the Taxi and Limousine Commission to consider allowing drivers to carry their licensed guns with them.

The TLC is expected to vote "no" on the plan when it takes it up on Thursday.

"It is important for public safety and perception to disallow any weapons in the vehicle,” the TLC wrote in response to the request.

Livery drivers are different than yellow taxi drivers in that they cannot pick up passengers. They are private car services that must be booked in advance.

There has been a series of shootings and robberies of livery drivers, leading to the request to carry guns.

"We are always concerned about the safety and security of drivers in our industry, so related issues were part of dozens of issues discussed by us and TLC representatives,” Livery Base Owners spokeswoman Cira Angeles told the News.
