Second Son Dies In PA Drowning Case Against Mother Who Heard 'Crazy Voices'

Laurel Michelle Schlemmer’s 6-year-old son, Daniel, has been declared brain dead less than one week after she was arrested for criminal homicide.

Her 3-year-old son Luke died Tuesday after Schlemmer, 40, allegedly tried to drown both children in the bathtub of her McCandless home.

Schlemmer is being held without bond at Allegheny County Jail on charges of criminal homicide, aggravated assault and child endangerment. Her preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 11.

She told police she tried to drown the boys by sitting on them in the bathtub after her third son left to go to school Tuesday morning.

She told investigators she was instructed by “crazy voices” and that she “thought she could be a better mother” to the oldest son “if the other two boys weren’t around.”

According to police and her pastor, Allegheny County's Office of Children, Youth and Families was in contact with Schlemmer last year after she backed her van into the same two children.

The county office ruled this incident was an accident, according to Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare Kait Gillis.
