Rep. Phil Hinkle: I Paid Man $80 for Encounter, but I'm Not Gay

| by Michael Allen

State Rep. Phil Hinkle has admitted that he paid 19-year-old Kameryn Gibson, who placed a solicitation posting on CraigsList, $80 to have a good time. However, Hinkle insists that he isn't gay and did nothing illegal. He also claims that he was a victim of a crime, but won't file a police report.

In calling for Hinkle’s resignation, Indiana House Speaker Brian Bosma said in a statement, “His continued service in the Indiana House is a distraction from that priority and a detriment to the continuing work of the legislature."

Bosma announced he was stripping Hinkle of his chairmanships of the Government and Regulatory Reform Committee and the Interim Study Committee on Driver Education.

Hinkle says he won't seek re-election, but won’t resign even though many in his party have called for him to step down: "Those people didn't elect me. The constituents did."

Hinkle's version of what happened August 6 at a JW Marriot hotel differs greatly from the version provided by Gibson. Hinkle says that he never exposed himself or offered anything to Gibson or his sister to keep quiet. Instead, Hinkle claims that Gibson stole an iPad and a Blackberry when he was in the bathroom.

Gibson’s side of the story claims that Hinkle tried to keep him from leaving, exposed himself and then, after his sister arrived, offered them $100 cash, an iPad and a Blackberry to keep quiet.

"These people," Hinkle said, "are lying through their teeth."  However, Gibson and his sister Megan stood by their story Tuesday. Hinkle said that resigning would be an acknowledgement that everything the Gibsons told The Indy Star was true.

Hinkle could not explain why he made the arrangement, using the email address, [email protected], that is listed on his legislative website.

"I don't know," Hinkle said. "I'm telling you, I don't know. I was on the road to self-destruction and I don't know why. I'm not gay. I went to the edge, but I didn't fall over the edge."
