The ranking Democrat on the House Homeland Security Committee believes that when Boston was shutdown on Friday, the economic loss suffered by the U.S. was a win for terrorists.

During an appearance on ABC’s “This Week,” Rep. Bennie Thompson said the closing down of the city helped the Boston Marathon bombers accomplish at least one of their goals.

“If you study what terrorists do, one of the things other than physical harm is the economic harm,” said Thompson, Mississippi’s Democratic 2nd District representative.

According to IHS Global Insight vice president and chief economist Jim Diffley, the cost of shutting down Boston for a day was $333 million.

As law enforcement officials searched for bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick and Boston Mayor Tom Menino made the decision to shutdown the city for the safety of the public, according to the Clarion Ledger.

Thompson also said that preventing future cases of terrorism requires vigilance.

“The public absolutely has to understand that to address this nexus to terrorism they will have to participate,” he said.
