Robert Jackson of Queens says that he was unnecessarily roughed up by police last month when he was arrested for swearing at an officer and ignoring requests to show his hands.
According to The Daily News, Jackson was punched and had his face mashed on the sidewalk when he was taken into custody outside of the Flushing YMCA. The arresting officers’ brutal treatment of Jackson, 19, left him with a sizeable C-shaped wound on his left cheek.
“When I first saw my face, I was shocked,” Jackson said during a news conference on Tuesday.
Jackson’s defense attorney, Jacques Leandre, plans to meet with Queens District Attorney Richard Brown this week and ask him to drop the charges. At the time of his arrest, a small Ziploc bag of marijuana was found on Jackson.

“He wasn’t trying to hurt anyone,” Leandre said. “Mr. Jackson is an innocent victim of police brutality.”
Leandre is a candidate in next week’s special election to fill the vacant City Council District 31 seat in southern Queens, but he said that political gain played no factor in his decision to take on Jackson’s case.
“I couldn’t create an incident on Jan. 8. I don’t have the ability,” Leandre said. “I’m going to do that [defend Jackson] irrespective of what happens on Feb. 19.” Leandre claims he took on Jackson as a pro bono client on Jan. 24.
There is reason why people are looking at Leandre’s motives with skepticism. He has shown previously that he willl do whatever it takes to win the election. Last month Leandre unsuccessfully sued six of his opponents to have them kicked off the electoral ballot.

This was not the first time Jackson has been involved with the NYPD. He has five prior arrests, including busts for weapons possession and trespassing. He also has tried to escape from police custody in the past, according to a source involved with law enforcement.
