No Pussy Riot Comparison, Julian Assange is a Criminal

In a televised speech from a London-based, Ecuadorian embassy, Julian Assange defended his actions and drew parallels between himself and Pussy Riot, the Russian punk rock band sentenced to two years in prison for anti-Putin protest songs.

Assange could not be farther off base.

The founder of Wikileaks, Assange published hundreds of thousands of U.S. diplomatic cables, inclusive of military secrets and national intelligence. While the extent of the direct repercussions of this release cannot be calculated, it is clear international relationships will be shaken, thousands of lives are put at risk, and innocent people will die.

And to what end? Some 250,000 cables in all -- too many for Assange to have read and analyzed individually -- there is no way even Assange understood the gravity of his release.

His actions were irresponsible and attention-seeking, and the world is less safe because of his actions. Individuals, whose confidential identity was their personal security, are less safe in a world where their confidential identity may have been compromised. To that end, Assange grew international publicity for himself while putting lives at risk.

Meanwhile, three young women in a band called Pussy Riot wrote and performed a Dylan-esque protest song, and have been sentenced to prison for two years. They are trying to enact change within Russia through performance art, by exercising free speech.

Unfortunately, their stunt may have gained too much attention, as the Russian government made an example of them in order to quell public protest against government.

Assange, you are a criminal (even outside of your alleged sex offences), and you set the world backwards. You have no right to compare yourself to three women who are trying to make positive change in the world.
