A scare on the campus of the University of California at Berkeley -- police confronted a man with a gun inside a classroom and shot him when he raised his weapon at them.

The Associated Press reports that a faculty member saw a person with a gun and called police. Officers followed him into a computer room at about 3pm and ordered him to put his hands up. Instead, school spokesman Dan Mogulof said he "raised his gun," so police shot him. His condition is not known.

The shooting happened about a half a mile away from a campus plaza where students and Occupy Cal demonstrators were protesting. It's not known of the gunman was a member of either the student body or of the anti-Wall Street movement.
