Two police officers from South Carolina have been charged with child neglect after police reportedly discovered they caused their 3-month-old son to sustain serious neck and head injuries.

York Police Cpl. Robert Jeff Taylor, 45, and Chester Police Sgt. Audrey Schurig, 36, were reportedly arreested on Friday and are being held in Mecklenburg County, reports Inquisitr. The couple brought their baby to Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill back in February after the infant had shown seizure-like symptoms. The baby was transported to Levine Children's Hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he remains in critical condition, reports Live 5 News

No additional information is available about why the child sustained these injuries. Taylor has since reportedly resigned from the police force, while Schurig -- whose cell phone was confiscated -- is on suspension without pay.

Schurig faces charges of unlawful neglect of a child. Taylor faces the same charge, in addition to abuse to inflict great bodily harm on a child.
