Police Officer Shoots, Kills 93-Year-Old Woman During 911 Call

| by Michael Allen

Pearlie Golden, 93, was reportedly shot five times by a police officer in Hearne, Texas on Tuesday.

The local DMV recently refused to renew Golden's driver’s license, but when her nephew tried to take her car keys, Golden reportedly grabbed a gun and allegedly threatened him, so he called 911.

Police Officer Stephen Stem arrived, told Golden to “put down the weapon and then ultimately fired his own sidearm, wounding Miss Golden,” says the police report.

Golden was pronounced dead after being taken to a local hospital.

"While it is too early in the investigation to comment on any of the facts or evidence... I can say that this was a very tragic occurrence," District Attorney Coty Siegert told KBTX. "My prayers go out to the family members of Miss Golden and to the Hearne community as a whole."

The shooting is being investigated by the police department, Texas Rangers and Robertson County Sheriff's Office, notes the New York Daily News.

“Even if she did have a gun, she is in her 90’s,” added neighbor Lawanda Cooke. “They could have shot in the air to scare her. Maybe she would have dropped it. I don’t see her shooting anyone.”
