A Mississippi man has been arrested and charged with attempted murder after his wife claims he put rat poison in her can of sweet tea.

Melvin Lee Moore, 44, of Red Banks, Mississippi, had been arguing with his wife, Deborah Moore, when he went to the store to get her something to drink, the sheriff’s department said.

After Melvin gave the can of sweet tea to his wife, she saw something on the rim of the can and something floating in the drink, FOX 13 reported. That’s when she called the sheriff’s department.

The sweet tea can Melvin allegedly gave his wife was sent to the Mississippi crime lab for testing, and after Fox 13 posted a story on the incident, Deborah called the news station to tell her side of the story.

She accused her husband of taking a can of tea from a small refrigerator in her bedroom, where the lights were switched off.

Deborah told Fox 13 the minute she started drinking the 24-ounce can of iced tea, her tongue became numb. She turned on the lights, saw something green around the lid of the can, and then immediately dialed 911.

Rat poison is sweet and often tastes like food, which can make it difficult to detect, according to FOX10 News.

Deborah’s teenage daughter was shocked, saying that Melvin had been in a relationship with her mother for five years.

“I’m glad he’s in jail because he can’t hurt my momma anymore. And she doesn’t have to worry about bumping into him on the street or anything,” the daughter told WREG.

Melvin is being held at the Marshall County Jail on a $750,000 bond.
