A well-dressed man attempted to rob a New York City Bank of America by handing a teller a note claiming he would kill customers if she didn’t give him money. The teller was terrified and began screaming, “Oh my God!”

At that point, the robber was caught on camera in the Third Avenue bank holding up a finger to his mouth and trying to shush the woman.

It did not quiet her, of course, as she ran screaming and hid for cover under a desk on the other end of the bank.

The would-be robber stood there in shock for a moment before he fled the scene.

The note, scribbled in black marker, read: “I have a gun and will use it. You have 5 seconds to hand over 100s, 50s, 20s before people start getting hurt.”

The suspect was wearing a suit, hat and tie when he entered the bank around 10 a.m. on Wednesday. Police estimate he is 5’8’’ to 5’10’’ and 180 lbs. He ran away empty-handed going south towards East 54th Street.

Figures from the FBI show that bank robbery is on the rise in New York City. Armed bank robbery increased by 69 percent from 2010 to 2011.
